A Year in the South is about four ordinary people in an extraordinary time. They lived in the South during 1865 -- a year that saw war, disunion, and slavery give way to peace, reconstruction, and emancipation. One was a slave determined to gain freedom, one a widow battling poverty and despair, one a man of God and planter's son grappling with spiritual and worldly troubles, and one a former Confederate soldier seeking a new life. Between January and December 1865 they witnessed, from very different vantage points, the death of the Old South and the birth of the New South. Civil War historian Stephen V. Ash reconstructs their daily lives, their fears and hopes, and their frustrations and triumphs in vivid detail, telling a dramatic story of real people in a time of great upheaval and offering a fresh perspective on a pivotal moment in history.
A Year in the South Four Lives in 1865 eBook Stephen V Ash
The author selects four individuals who actually lived in the South in 1865 and paints a vivid picture of what it was like to live in the waning months of the most destructive conflict in American history. He makes the story jump with authenticity. The reader gets a genuine feeling of the Civil War within the Civil War in Tennessee where eastern and western TN residents battled each other over their loyalties to (respectively) North and South, the life of a proud Southern family whose fortunes decline with the South's fortunes as the war progresses, and a revealing look at the life of a slave in the South as the war was ending. I strongly recommend reading this book. It is easily read. I communicated with the author, a professor at a major university in the South, and he was kind enough to respond to my compliments. Highly, highly recommended read. I regularly pull it off the shelf and read sections of it again just to regain a feeling of what it was like to be there. As an amateur Civil War historian I was lucky to stumble across this read. rhProduct details

A Year in the South Four Lives in 1865 eBook Stephen V Ash Reviews
A different kind of read. It was interesting to learn about one year in the lives of these 4 different people. What each season brought and how each handled the difficulties that came dealing with the war's aftermath. towards the end of the book I was getting a little concerned that I'd not appreciate the ending not having any conclusions, but thankfully there is an "Epilogue" that does finish off the stories nicely. I'd enjoy reading more true events like this in history. It gives true feelings and doesn't gloss over prejudices that each person felt and experienced. Enjoyed reading these true accounts of each one of their lives.
Well written and researched, related to how Americans of different races and economic classes survived after the Civil War ends.
Very accessible work and well written, recommend for anyone who wants to get different perspectives of the same time period
Well written. Very informative about how the people of the South survived the Civil War.
The book is an unvarnished look at life in the south at the end of the civil war. It is a well written account from four distinctive view points.
I purchased this book because my daughter chose this book for a summer reading project. She wasn't too thrilled to have to read non fiction over the summer but she said the book actually was quite interesting. She wrote a paper on the book which had to persuade people to read the book and also do a PowerPoint presentation the first week of school. She got an A and also was surprised because, at least in her class, it was the only book the teacher asked to read. It must have sounded interesting to him! We will probably donate to the library now because we initially got it from the library but there was too much demand for it and she couldn't keep it out long enough so that is why we purchased it.
Excellent book - I ordered it after reading a short recommendation in the WSJ and am most happy I did. 1865 was an important year - the stories of the 4 individuals who make up this book are of page-turning quality, especially knowing that the accounts are non-fiction. Highly recommended for anyone who likes to read history.
